Key Tax Dates for UK Delivery Drivers (2025/26)

Missing a tax deadline can be expensive. As a self-employed delivery driver, you don't have an HR department to remind you when things are due. It's up to you to stay on top of HMRC's calendar.

Here are the crucial dates you need to mark in your diary for the 2025/2026 tax year.

6th April 2025: Start of the New Tax Year

This is when the tax clock resets. Your earnings from this date onwards count towards your 2025/26 tax return. It's the perfect time to:

  • Reset your mileage log.
  • Set up a new folder (digital or physical) for this year's receipts.
  • Review your simplified expenses vs. actual costs strategy.

31st July 2025: Second Payment on Account

If you make Payments on Account (advance payments towards your tax bill), the second instalment for the previous tax year (2024/25) is due today. This is often 50% of your previous year's tax bill.

5th October 2025: Registration Deadline

If you started gig work between 6th April 2024 and 5th April 2025 and earned more than £1,000, you must register for Self Assessment by this date. If you're already registered, you don't need to do it again.

31st January 2026: The Big Deadline

This is the most important date in the calendar. By midnight, you must:

  • File your online Self Assessment tax return for the 2024/25 tax year.
  • Pay any tax you owe for that year.
  • Pay your first Payment on Account for the current year (2025/26) if applicable.

Warning: The automatic penalty for filing late is £100, even if you don't owe any tax.

5th April 2026: End of the Tax Year

The cycle completes. Make sure you've logged all your expenses up to this date to maximise your deductions.
